Book Review: Making Sense out of Suffering

Author: Peter Kreeft

Why do bad things happen to good people?  Perhaps a simple, more personal question that is often asked is, “Why am I suffering?”  Pain and suffering historically have been and continue to be some of the greatest obstacles to people’s faith.  More people are converted to atheism because of the issue of pain and suffering than any other.

In “Making Sense Out Of Suffering” Peter Kreeft does an outstanding job defining the problem, discussing various responses from the past, and delivering the Biblical answer.  Taking the classic approach of free will, he shows the origin of the dilemma, clues from philosophers, artists, and the prophets, and then shows how they converge to the answer – Jesus Christ.

If you are looking for a starting point to begin studying this issue, I highly recommend you begin here.  Kreeft’s writing style is easy to follow and comprehend, making it a great book for all levels.  Also, he approaches and deals with the issue theologically instead of relying on personal tragedy, adding credibility and applicability to the work.  Upon completion you will develop a greater appreciation of the subject, a better feeling about yourself, and an answer to objections you likely have or will encounter.

There is one word of caution, as with any book written by a member of a denomination, be on guard for subtle hints of their doctrine.  In this case watch for simple statements promoting original sin.
